Goofy Foot by David Daniel

Publisher: St. Martin's Minotaur ISBN: 0312323492

PI Alex Rasmussenís  latest case involves the disappearance of a teenage girl and her father from the small coastal town of Standish, MA.  And as Alex starts digging, he discovers that this little town has plenty of secrets, secrets that some may kill to keep silent, from the years-ago drowning of a teenage girl, to the new luxury site of expensive homes.  Using old connections, and new ones, he staves off the unknown enemy who will stop at nothing to keep Alex from learning the truth.

Daniel is a writer who loves his metaphors.  But sprinkled as they are liberally throughout this book, they tend to distract rather than add to an otherwise interesting story.  PI Rasmussen is the archetype of the willful PI; heís an ex-cop, heís divorced, and heís stubborn, never letting gunfire or fists slow him down.  So while thereís really nothing original or fresh here, this is still a somewhat suspenseful tale that mildly satisfies, and Rasmussen is likable enough to keep the pages turning.  So for those who like their PI stories to follow the formula, this is the one for you.
